Misconceptions about the HPV vaccine

"Vaccine versus Chastity Belt"

1/3 of 9th graders and 2/3 of 12th graders have engaged in sexual intercourse. 24% of high school seniors have had sex with 4 or more partners. (Jamal A, et al. J Natl Cancer Inst. 2013;105:175-201.)

HPV has also been detected in virgins. 45.5% of women have HPV prior to vaginal intercourse. Any sexual touching can transmit the virus.

(Shew ML, et al. J Infect. Dis. 2012; 207:1012-1015)

You can still get HPV after marriage.

"Did the HPV vaccine kill my daughter?"

Unfortunately, Meredith died from Diphenhydramine intoxication (an overdose of antihistamine, medications such as Benadryl). There is NO evidence that her death was related to the vaccine.

There have been no deaths that were directly related to the vaccine. There have been 200 million doses given and there has been no serious side effects or deaths.

The only potential side effects are fainting and anaphylaxis (an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the vaccine). One Australian review stated that there was a 2.6 / 100,000 risk of anaphylaxis. In most cases, this is treatable.

"Our daughters aren't guinea pigs." - Maclean's Magazine Cover August 2007

This is called irresponsible journalism. Magazines use scare tactics to sell their magazines. The federal chief public health officer himself called it irresponsible and it has been removed from their website.

All vaccines go through 3 phases of testing before they are introduced to the general public. This takes several years and only after this is the vaccine approved by the government.
